Orthodox Candles

Orthodox Candles

In orthodox churches you will have many places to light candles. In the narthex or inside the nave where icons are located or near by.

Typical orthodox candles are yellow long thin candles because in the old days they were made with beeswax. Today they are made with paraffin and colored.

Faithful light candle because Jesus said: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12

Usually candles are let to burn down, in some churches they will be removed before. The only reason is that to preserve the frescos around the church they are requested by the ministry of antiquities to do so.
