On January 6th (new calendar) the Christian Orthodox world celebrate the baptism of Jesus with the blessing of the waters.
The ceremony start in the church with the blessing of the Holy Cross inside a bassin with holy water. After the priest and common prayers the folk will follow the priest next to the sea, but is also done at rivers and lakes.
The men will be ready to jump in to the cold waters as soon as the priest will throw the holy cross.
The blessed one to found it first its said to have blessed year.
In some places the cross is thrown once in other three times.
This event take place everywhere in Greece. In the islands is a very special intimate moment as at the time the place belong to the islanders and is not yet overtaken by the tourists.
